Pies Descalzos Foundation
In this world, there are three professions where
people are overpaid - Sports, Acting and Music. In the 1970's,
an artist making over a half a million for one album was unheard
of. Now that's normal, and can be a lot more depending on the
album's popularity. Stars are constantly trying to look good in
front of the camera. What better way to look good is to show that
they aren't stuck up and make donations to charity. One star might
give 200,000 to a charity, another 300,000. Don't be fooled by
the big numbers.
If you look at percentages, that is only about 6
to 10 percent of their yearly income. Being a Catholic, I know
the church asks about 10 percent of your annual salary. Some Baptist
and Mormon churches can ask as much as 30 percent of your yearly
income. Dollar for dollar, a star is giving just as much to charities
as a average working person. Then there are the exceptions.
These people, instead of just giving relatively
small donations to charities, build their own foundations. One
example is Montel Williams, an American Talk Show host with Muscular
Dystrophy (MS). He has raised awareness in the states about the
disease and has helped scientists get closer to finding a cure.
Shakira also created a Foundation on behalf of the
needy, and called it the Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet) Foundation.
Its objective is to help the most affected areas of the world.
Shakira was in Armenia where an earthquake
took thousands of lives and left many homeless. She is also busy
with helping the victims of Hurricane George and Mitch that devastated
Central American countries. She also inaugurated schools and hospitals
for children of low economic resources.
Pies Descalzos is an association that was created
at the end of 97 in which Shakira and other volunteers hold events
with the purpose of gathering funds that are set aside for the
foundations that help the defenseless children of Colombia, associations
that help children with heart problems, with AIDS, leukemia, and
children on the street or children of soldiers who died in combat.
Shakira, having coming from the dirty industrial
city in Colombia, knows first hand the hardships of poverty. Finally,
another star putting their money to good use.
